Well, the day has arrived, retirement - my very last day of full-time work - 26th September 2009.
I started work on the first Monday in September, the 5th I think, 1963 - 46 years ago as an apprentice electrician at the London Electricity Board! My last act at work is nicely circular! fitting a thermostat to the heater in the office WC.
The start of my retirement is not quite what I had planned - but that's life!
A week and a bit in from the news and we are beginning to come to terms with what it will mean - we saw the Stoma Nurse yesterday and whilst she allayed some of our fears and uncertainties, the reality of a bag - for life!! bugger Waitrose!! is no more appealing!
Intellectually I know 1000's of people lead perfectly normal lives with this inconvenience but emotionally I have some way to go to accept it - I'm expecting a call any minute to say my notes were mixed up and I'm OK! Got the CT scan on Monday and then we are all set for the 20th Oct.
Tuesday we're off to Crete - burglars reading this please note - take the TV and all the attendant gubbins in the cabinet in the living room PLEASE!
It should be warm in Vamos, about 26, though it's always warmer there than the same number here? If you'd like a look at where we are click - http://www.crete-escapes.com/crete-villas-vamos-oleander.htm.
Will try to do an entry from Vamos if the magic broardband mobile dongle works there.

Well done Roger, after 46 years you deserve a holiday. Villa looks terrific and I'm sure the weather will be georgous. You know that, daunting as all this business seems, you'll get on, get through and get better just as you have over the years with other things. The bag is a pain but Suzanne will just have to knit you a jumper with "No man hugs please" on the fron! So, see you and suzanne, your place or ours?.......14th for fish and chips and catch up. Look forward to it and have a great trip.

So sorry your last day in the office was a VERY damp squib - on your knees fixing wallpaper round the toilet!! What a way to go!! (Although I DID make you a cup of tea!!) We'll just have to try and make up for it later on...after your recuperation from the op is complete and you go off to sunny Crete "properly". Hope you can enjoy your short stay for now and see you all at Gatwick on 13th! lots of love Sally & Co.
ReplyDeleteSally has kept me up to date with what has been going on but it is a great idea to have this blog spot. Have a good holiday and forget about the op for a few weeks if you can. My Mum has a Stoma and even though she is 83 she copes very well with it. Ian sends his best,

Rog - You were always the one for doing it differently and you never cease to amaze us with your ingenuity and sheer style. This time it is the blog! No doubt, with this retirement time, you will have new thinking space .... before cracking on with the Crete project.
